My story

My story began when I was born as Jan Segers, the daughter of an air force officer who moved us from Texas to Japan to Tennessee to Tampa to Japan again, and then to Pennsylvania to Germany and back to Tampa. After college, I taught middle school English. When I married, I became Jan Ballantine and moved to Puerto Rico with my husband who studied marine sciences at the University of Puerto Rico. After he graduated, we remained there and he taught in the same department. I continued to teach English, but as a second language. I went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and taught at Inter American University. Once I was divorced, I moved back to the Tampa area with my young daughter and found a job teaching oral and written communication courses at St. Petersburg College. After I retired, I married again, became Jan Rysdon and started a new career as a consulting hypnotist. I’m now divorced and enjoying family, clients, and creating mindfulness projects.

The most important part of my story happened in the 1980’s when I was still living in Puerto Rico. That’s when, on a visit to see my father in the Tampa area, my dear uncle and hypnotherapist David Segers taught me his theory about a new model of the brain and shared with me a unique technique to identify and heal areas in the brain that caused pain and suffering by activating endorphins. He called it “Erasing.”  As I practiced the technique, I began to release negative emotions.  Utilizing his technique helped me deal more competently with difficult people and situations in life, so I began teaching it to others.

Uncle David had used his technique to help  many of his clients. However, not until I was diagnosed with breast cancer late in 1988 had he attempted to use the technique to heal the body of a serious illness.   Upon diagnosis, I immediately began to practice the Erasing technique incorporating Norman Vincent Peale’s imagery ideas, as I continued with medical protocols.  As I went through the traditional medical procedures for inflammatory breast cancer, I discovered there were few long-term survivors.  I was determined to survive! I was only 40 years old!

My doctors were amazed when my breast was removed three months after diagnosis and no inflammatory cancer cells were found. I attributed

the positive diagnosis to the wonderful gift of healing Uncle David had given me. Uncle David has since passed on to be part of a higher universe, so now in loving memory I share his gift with others by teaching them to heal themselves and to cope with life’s difficult moments in professional and personal settings. Because of the theory and the way the technique worked for me, I renamed it “See it! Say it! Zap it!”  Today, my clients continue to enjoy learning and using “See It! Say it! Zap it!”  and have shared their Testimonials with me.

Below, you can watch an interview that Patricia Scott, president of UP Hypnosis Institute, conducted with me about the technique.

My dear late uncle David contributed to my resilience and determination to face all odds with a powerful, positive frame of mind. I am so grateful for the gifts he gave me.

Today, sharing the ideas I’ve learned through the years has become an important goal for me. I love working with my dear friend and collaborator, Bonnie Snyder, as we create Heart-Thoughtful Mindfulness books, presentations, courses, and other projects to assist communities of children and adults to become happy and resilient. I look forward to continuing this journey for many years to come.
