What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened, focused attention best achieved through physical relaxation while you are seated in a comfortable chair. You do not sleep; instead your unconscious mind is alert and receptive to suggestions. During hypnosis, you are aware of everything being said and are always in control. Hypnosis is also an education and communication process that allows your own inner intelligence to help you make the changes you desire. The hypnotist assists you in carrying out the work during each session. Most people find hypnosis to be a pleasant, enjoyable, and successful experience that causes positive change leading to self-empowerment. Many of Jan’s clients say, “WOW!” when they come out of the formal trance because they have experienced powerful transformations and true relaxation during the session.

Is hypnosis medically approved? Will insurance pay for hypnosis?

Hypnosis has not been universally approved. However, the state of Florida allows a hypnotist to work with medical practitioners.  The client will need to get a referral when consulting with a hypnotist for a medical diagnosis.  Hypnosis is frequently used as a complementary technique along with medical treatment. Some insurance companies may cover hypnotherapy for childbirth programs and medical conditions, so contact your insurance provider and/or your FSA, HRA, and HSA plan. The Internal Revenue Service requires a doctor’s statement be provided for certain healthcare expenses in order to be reimbursed from your healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA). The doctor’s statement must indicate the specific medical disorder, the specific treatment needed, and how this treatment will alleviate the medical condition. **Some services may require a medical referral. If you have a medical condition, please share this information with Jan and provide documentation.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Yes, anyone can be hypnotized. Some people go into a light trance while others go into a deep trance. Your unconscious mind will receive the suggestions in whatever stage of trance your body feels is right for you to make a change. You will also learn self-hypnosis as part of the education process. It will be up to you to create the success you desire based on the outcome you establish.

Who can benefit from hypnosis?

Adults – including senior citizens – teens, and children benefit from work done in hypnosis sessions. Hypnosis is especially beneficial for anyone who wants to prepare for medical, surgical, and dental procedures, for women who want comfortable childbirth, and for anyone who wants to gain control over emotional issues.

Research and practice show the benefits of hypnosis:

Prepare for medical & surgical procedures

Studies of patients undergoing surgery who were taught self-hypnosis by the team of Dr. Mehmet Oz, cardiothoracic surgeon, revealed the patients were significantly less tense as well as less depressed, less fatigued, and required less medication. They felt empowered and left the hospital sooner than those who did not receive the training. –Chip Brown, “The Experiments of Dr. Oz”

“Contemporary clinical investigators claim that the combination of analgesia and hypnosis is superior to conventional pharmacologic anesthesia for minor surgical cases, with patients and surgeons responding favorably.”   –University of Florida College of Medicine

 Achieve a comfortable childbirth experience:

“When learning about how the mind controls the body, the expectant couple is taught to surround themselves with only positive people and messages, to create a positive view of childbirth and the expectation that their birthing with be the beautiful, peaceful experience that they want. Fear Clearing Sessions are integral to this process, as they allow each person to address fears they have, work through possible solutions and then release them. Fear in labor can create tension, which creates pain, then more fear, and the cycle continues. Fear and anxiety can also create adrenaline production in the body, causing the labor to become dysfunctional, a common reason for  Cesarean Section surgery. Freedom from fear can make a huge difference in the birthing experience.  –Kerry Tuschhoff . “Hypnosis for Childbirth: What Is It and Does It Work?”

Gain control over emotional issues and addiction:
“Hypnosis offers a way to conceptualise how human beings construct their individual realities, and how to interact more effectively with others; in clinical hypnosis hypnotic processes are employed as agents of effective communication and change. ”   –Dr. Michael Yapko in the Encyclopaedia Britannica Medical and Health Annuals

Recover from substance abuse
In addition to using hypnosis, consider Recovery Village, an organization with locations across the country, dedicated to providing the best treatment possible to those struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Their philosophy is that all individuals with the desire and ability to seek treatment are provided with the highest quality care at reasonable rates. Their website is an educational resource by hosting helpful articles, blog posts, and resource pages to increase understanding and awareness of addiction – a disease that affects so many.
