visualization

“Brain studies now reveal that thoughts produce the same mental instructions as actions. Mental imagery impacts many cognitive processes in the brain: motor control, attention, perception, planning, and memory. So the brain is getting trained for actual performance during visualization. It’s been found that mental practices can enhance motivation, increase confidence and self-efficacy, improve motor performance, prime your brain for success, and increase states of flow—all relevant to achieving your best life!”
~AJ Adams, “Seeing is Believing: The Power of Visualization.”

mindfulness & breathwork

When you engage in Heart-Thoughtful Mindfulness and live in the moment without judgement, your thoughts shift from those that can put you in the stress response to those that create calm, clear thinking. And when you add something as simple as taking a deep breath or a series of deep breaths, you also allow the body to relax and give you an opportunity to think before you say or do something you may regret.

Research and practice reveal the benefits of stress management strategies

The Mayo Clinic urges patients to manage stress and provides information at its website.

Live Life in the Low Stress Zone is an article by the American Heart Association.

In her article, Easing Pain and Improving Patient Satisfaction with Integrative Care, Bonnie Horrigan discusses the results of research commissioned by the Bravewell Collaborative to determine how and to what extent integrative care was being practiced in 29 prominent integrative medical centers in the U.S.  The results were published in the 2012 report Integrative Medicine in America: How Integrative Medicine Is Being Practiced in Clinical Centers Across the United States. The Beth Israel Medical Center’s “inpatient program began in 2007 with such modalities as Reiki, acupuncture, yoga and stress management, including biofeedback, guided imagery, aromatherapy and meditation.”  Patients are empowered and gain relief.

Stress Reduction Through Meditation May Aid in Slowing the Progression  of Alzheimer’s Disease : This site explains the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center pilot study showing promise for age-related cognitive diseases. Participants were randomized two to one either to a group who participated in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) using meditation and yoga, or a control group who received normal care. The study group met for two hours each week for eight weeks. They also participated in a day-long mindfulness retreat, and were encouraged to continue their practice at home for 15 to 30 minutes per day. The results of fMRI imaging showed that the group engaged in MBSR had significantly improved functional connectivity in the areas of the default mode network. Additionally, as expected, both groups experienced atrophy of the hippocampus, but those who practiced MBSR experienced less atrophy.

Researchers studying the emotional well-being of advanced prostate cancer patients, hypothesized that better stress management skills would relate to greater physical and emotional well-being by mitigating perceived stress levels. Their analyses revealed a positive correlation between stress management and how well the patients felt.  Read more at Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings.  March 2013, Volume 20, Issue 1, pp 25-32

Community for Accredited Online Schools is a comprehensive accreditation resource that provides prospective students and families with the tools needed to make well-informed decisions about their education. Their guide provides causes and symptoms of stress for students from elementary age to college. This is vital to address as these pressures can evolve into related stress disorders like depression or substance abuse. The guide also provides tips on how teachers can limit stress in the classroom and how parents can help with getting kids to reduce their stress  levels.  www.accreditedschoolsonline.org/resources/student-stress/ urges patients to manage stress and provides information.

The Community for Accredited Online Schools has also created a resource for college students to combat stress.  In the guide students will learn about common forms of stress encountered in college, what causes stress in the first place, how stress manifests itself in college students, and what to look for if a student feels he/she or a friend may be in over their head. The guide also provides a comprehensive list of resources to help students navigate this time of transition and graduate as happy and healthy adults.  www.affordablecollegesonline.org/balancing-student-stress/
